Today, we’re proud to celebrate Abdulsalam Oladipipo, a fourth-year medical student at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria, for the publication of his latest research paper. Predictive Model for Post-Operative Pain, now available online in the Annals of Translational Medicine and Rehabilitation. Abdulsalam’s work specializes in the field of infectious disease epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and public health interventions, which align with his long-term goal of conducting research to address global health challenges.
As a volunteer with ABA World and the University of Houston Clear Lake, Abdulsalam supports autism community outreach and research, contributing to initiatives that aim to improve the lives of children with autism in Nigeria. His intellectual curiosity and dedication are shown in his research portfolio, which spans post-operative pain management, antioxidant activity of natural extracts, and sustainable water management through a One Health lens. At ABA World and UHCL, we are thrilled for the collaboration with Professor Abdulfatai Bakare, who has been supporting projects for students like Abdulsalam, making contributions to community health.
Abdulsalam’s research experience is extensive. As a personal research assistant at King Fahad Hospital in Hofuf, Saudi Arabia, he has contributed to research papers, managing tasks from editing to creating graphics and navigating the peer-review process. At the Center for Advanced Medical Research and Training (CAMRET) at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, he gained hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques, including PCR and gel electrophoresis. At the same time, his role as an undergraduate research assistant in the Department of Community Medicine involved analyzing data on electronic gender-based violence and designing public health surveys. Currently, he is leading a PROSPERO-registered systematic review on the impact of climate change on cholera incidence in Sokoto State, collaborating with a co-author from Nagasaki University, Japan.
Beyond research, Abdulsalam is a leader in his community. As the pioneer student lead for the Nigeria Planetary Health Report Card, he worked with the Planetary Health Alliance to assess sustainable healthcare education at his university, marking a first for Nigeria and West Africa. He also serves as the Coordinator of Partnership and Collaboration for the Student One Health Innovative Club (SOHIC) and as the Public Relations Officer for the Kogi State Medical Students Association, where he drives public health outreach and communication efforts. His volunteer work includes malaria diagnostic testing, career mentorship for secondary school students, and contributions to clean water initiatives under the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Abdulsalam’s achievements have earned him recognition, including a scholarship to attend the 2025 Neurodivergence Wellbeing Conference in Australia and selection as the only Nigerian participant for an abstract presentation at the SPARTAN Annual General Meeting in Toronto. He is also a winner of the BioSync Pitch Competition for his innovative research on phage therapy as a solution to AMR in Africa. His skills in bioinformatics (R, Python), data analysis (SPSS, Excel), and graphic design (Canva, Biorender) complement his research and leadership efforts.
We congratulate Abdulsalam and the faculty at Usmanu Danfodiyo University for their support. His work shows the intellectuality, vision, and promise of Nigeria’s next generation of medical and public health leaders. We look forward to seeing his continued impact.
