Over the past 12 years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with caregivers, educators, healthcare professionals, professors, and community leaders across many African countries, from Egypt and Morocco in the north to South Africa and Botswana in the south, from West African nations like Nigeria and Liberia to East African countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. I have witnessed firsthand the spirit that defines this diverse continent.

On this Africa Day, I would like to celebrate the people, the essence of Africa. What sets them apart isn't professional achievements or wealth, but love for the community and a deep sense of responsibility towards family. In my twenty years in the United States, I have never met someone from Africa who wasn't actively supporting family back home. While cultures across Africa vary, there is a common thread that ties them together: the generosity and kindness of the people. The passion, creativity, strength, and vision for the future, the resilience, and hope.

Africa has gifted the world with extraordinary minds whose contributions have shaped literature, architecture, science, and leadership. From Nobel Prize-winning authors who have elevated African voices in global literature, to poets and novelists whose works have become cornerstone texts of world literature. The continent has produced leaders who fought for independence, human rights, and social justice, transforming not only their nations but also inspiring movements worldwide. In architecture, designers have revolutionized sustainable building practices and brought African architectural principles to international recognition, including the first African recipient of the prestigious Pritzker Prize. Scientific pioneers have made contributions to medicine, mathematics, computer science, and paleontology, advancing knowledge and saving lives. Contemporary voices continue this legacy through storytelling, filmmaking, and artistic expression that illuminates African perspectives for the world.

Today, let's honor the people of Africa and celebrate their contributions. Let us wish for growth and a future where everyone has more than they need. Happy Africa Day!
