I was fortunate to meet Mrs. Dotun Akande in 2024 at her center in Ikeja GRA, Lagos. The moment I stepped into Patrick's Speech and Languages Centre, I was struck by the passion and dedication that was evident through every aspect of her work as well as her desire to uplift others.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, I want to share my experience meeting an extraordinary advocate who has transformed countless lives. I met Mrs. Dotun Akande in May 2024 at her center in Ikeja GRA, Lagos. The moment I stepped into Patrick's Speech and Languages Centre, I was struck by the atmosphere of acceptance, compassion, and quality work. Her passion and dedication were evident in every corner of the facility, and her commitment to uplifting individuals with autism and their families left an indelible impression on me.

As the Founder and Director of Patrick Speech and Languages Centre (Patricks), Mrs. Akande has revolutionized autism awareness and support in Nigeria. Since establishing the center in 2006, her vision was born from a desire to support the educational needs and development of children and young adults with autism.

What impressed me most during my visit was the exceptional quality of care provided by the therapists and educators at the center. Under Mrs. Akande's leadership, Patricks has become the pioneer Special Needs Centre for children with autism in Lagos, offering comprehensive services including speech therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, and behavior therapy. In an environment that radiates love and compassion, they teach social and vocational skills using evidence-based methodologies.

Mrs. Akande's knowledge is matched only by the size of her heart. She has successfully integrated over 50 children into mainstream schools and provided employment opportunities for adults with autism. She is committed to helping families across all economic backgrounds and provides educational support to parents and therapists.

Her credentials include qualification as a Behavior Analyst from the Florida Institute of Technology USA and certification as an Advanced Certified Autism Specialist (ACAS). Under her leadership, Patricks became the first Nigerian Autism Centre registered with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

What makes Mrs. Akande remarkable is her leadership and advocacy for autism awareness. She continues to educate the community, breaking down stigmas and building understanding. Her vision for an inclusive society where individuals with autism can achieve anything is inspiring.

I look up to Mrs. Dotun Akande not just for what she has accomplished but for who she is, a passionate leader, a dedicated advocate, and a source of hope for families with autistic children in Nigeria. Her work has touched thousands of lives, with over 3,000 children seen and more than 450 children receiving scholarships since 2006.

In a world that often overlooks those who are different, Mrs. Akande stands tall as a reminder of the power of compassion, dedication, and visionary leadership. She is, without doubt, a hero worth celebrating.
