In a world where access to healthcare remains unequal, individuals like Dr. Hildah Bwembya Nkonde are valuable leaders, and supporters of hope and transformation. A dental surgeon with a commitment to equity, Dr. Nkonde is creating the path to bridging the oral health gap for marginalized communities in Zambia and Botswana, for individuals with disabilities including autism.
I had the honor of meeting Dr. Hildah five years ago at the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) One Voice Conference. Her ambition, intellect, and heart for service were motivating. It's no surprise that since that time, she has risen as a leader, researcher, and community advocate whose work continues to inspire across borders.
This April, as we observe Autism Awareness Month, it's especially fitting to spotlight Dr. Nkonde's inclusive approach to healthcare. Through her nonprofit, the Save a Smile Initiative, based in Ndola, Zambia, she provides cost-free oral healthcare services to marginalized populations, making sure that no one is left behind, including individuals with physical, developmental, and intellectual disabilities. Her current project, Save My Smile, supported by the 2024 MCW Global Alumni Ventures Fund, is specifically designed to improve oral healthcare access for people with disabilities.
Dr. Nkonde's leadership journey has taken her around the globe, from Zambia to New York, Dar es Salaam, and Denver. She has worked with renowned institutions such as Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Boston College to co-develop training programs on dental waste management, while also presenting impactful research at international conferences. Notably, she was selected as a fellow of the 2023 MCW Global Young Leaders Fellowship and now mentors the 2024 cohort.
In addition to her clinical and academic accomplishments, Dr. Nkonde is a project manager and grant writer. She has successfully implemented multiple health-focused initiatives, receiving prestigious grants such as the 2022 MCW Global Conference Grant, the 2023 Alliance Global Award, and now, the 2024 MCW Global Alumni Ventures Fund.
Her work is more than just service, it's a movement toward justice, equity, and community empowerment.
As we honor Autism Awareness Month, let us also celebrate champions like Dr. Hildah Nkonde who are building inclusive systems and safe spaces for individuals with disabilities. Her vision, strength, and compassion are transforming lives in Zambia and Botswana.
To Dr. Hildah: thank you for your passion, and your leadership, and for showing us what it means to care deeply and act courageously. You are a gift to our community and the global health landscape.
