“You Just Haven’t Been Taught in a Way That Works for You Yet”

How one autistic educator built the classroom she needed.

Part of our work at ABA World is standing with autistic adults in employment, including those who are building businesses of their own. You may remember her as the voice from Kuwait in our Spark a Spectrum. Since then, she has founded The Learning Lab, a tutoring service where lessons are adapted to the way each student learns. We asked her to tell her story, and handed her the microphone.

I’m autistic, and it’s a big part of why I teach the way I do. I know what it feels like to sit in a classroom that was not built for the way your mind works, and to be told the answer is simply to try harder. I never believed that, and I still don’t.

Learning is not a one-size-fits-all process. Every student understands and processes information differently, but traditional education often expects everyone to learn in the same way, at the same pace, in the same room. That is where students get left behind. Not because they cannot learn, but because they have not yet been taught in a way that fits them.

So I started The Learning Lab, a space where students learn at their own pace, ask questions without feeling judged, and have lessons shaped around the way their own mind works. I meet each student where they are, and I help them see how far they can actually go.

A different way of being taught

We offer personalized tutoring in Math, Science, English, and Physics, and every lesson is adapted to the student in front of us. What makes us different is that we work with all kinds of learners, and we understand that a student often does not need to try harder. They need to be taught differently. Work smarter, not harder.

That means breaking hard concepts down, finding what actually works for each person, and making learning feel less overwhelming and more achievable. We help with homework, exam preparation, and building study habits that last. And we make room for study breaks, a moment to readjust, to get back into learning mode, or simply to stim and breathe a little. There is no pressure here.

Who I am here for

I especially welcome students with different learning styles and neurodivergent learners. Some are struggling with one subject, some are preparing for an exam, some are rebuilding their confidence, and some are just looking for a learning environment that finally understands them. I adapt my teaching to the student, rather than asking the student to adapt to me.

The thing that motivates me most is a moment I get to see again and again. It is when a student goes from “I don’t understand this” to “Wait, I actually can do this.” That shift in confidence matters to me every bit as much as the mark at the end of the exam.

Where I’m headed

The Learning Lab is still growing, and I am only beginning to gather our students’ success stories. But my hope for it is bigger than tutoring. I want it to become a genuinely inclusive learning community, where students feel understood, supported, and encouraged to learn in their own way. Over time I would love to widen the subjects we offer, work with many more students, build resources for different learning styles, and grow a team of educators who share the same belief.

Because that belief is simple. Struggling to learn does not mean you are not capable of learning. Sometimes you just have not been taught in a way that works for you yet. Different minds, different learning styles, and the same goal for all of us: confidence, understanding, and progress. Every student belongs in the learning environment. It is your journey. I just help steer the ship toward your goals. 😊
